The Secret to Cooking with Little Ones: Prep
The key to cooking with little ones is in the prep. As they get older, they can take on more of the process — but when you’re working with preschoolers, it’s best to bring out all the ingredients first. You can even measure everything out ahead of time to avoid spills and mishaps.
A quick tip: if you’re not comfortable letting little hands handle raw meat, do the mixing yourself and have the kids add in the ingredients. It keeps things safe without leaving anyone out of the fun.
Ready to get started? Here’s a recipe that’s practically built for little helpers.
Today’s Recipe: Grandma’s Meatloaf
Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 50 minutes | Total time: 1 hour
Age guidance: Ages 3+ can pour and stir pre-measured ingredients. Ages 6+ can help measure ingredients themselves. Mixing the raw meat is best left to an adult.
Today I’m sharing my mom’s meatloaf recipe. It’s easy to make, was a staple in our house when my kids were growing up, and the leftovers make a fantastic lunch sandwich with a slice of cheese on top.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. lean ground beef or turkey
- 1 cup Italian-style panko or breadcrumbs
- ½ cup diced or shredded onion (optional)
- ⅛ cup ketchup
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp mustard
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
Instructions
- Set up your ingredients. Place the ground beef or turkey in a mixing bowl (or right in the casserole dish for easier cleanup).
- Depending on their age, have your kids measure out or pour the pre-measured ketchup, salt, pepper, mustard, egg, and onion into the bowl.
- Mix and mold into a loaf. (Tip: if you’d rather keep little hands off the raw meat, do the mixing yourself and let the kids add the ingredients.)
- Bake until the internal temperature reaches a minimum of 145°F, about 50 minutes.
- Serve with two of their favorite veggies and enjoy!
More than the meal itself, it’s the time spent talking and cooking together that makes it special. It turns what could feel like a chore into real, quality family time.
