Cooking with Kenson Kids: Healthier Pizza Night the Whole Family Will Love
Welcome back to Cooking with Kenson Kids — our Friday series dedicated to getting families back in the kitchen together. This week, we're tackling a family favorite that doesn't always get a health-conscious reputation: pizza night.
If I Could Only Eat One Food...
If you asked me to pick one food I could survive on for the rest of my life, it would be pizza. No contest. And I don't think I'm alone here.
Friday nights were always pizza night in our house growing up, and they still are now. There's something about it — the anticipation, the toppings, everyone getting exactly what they want on their own slice. It's one of those traditions that just sticks.
But if I'm being honest, delivery or takeout pizza isn't exactly the healthiest way to keep that tradition going every week. The good news? There's a way to keep everything we love about pizza night — the fun, the customization, the Friday ritual — while making it a whole lot healthier. And it's easy enough that the whole family can get involved.
Why We Switched to Homemade
Everyone in my family has their own taste when it comes to pizza. I'm a plain pepperoni (or turkey pepperoni) person. My husband is all about mushrooms, or a full-on supreme with everything on it. Trying to make one "family pizza" that makes everyone happy is basically impossible.
So instead, we make personal pizzas — everybody builds their own, exactly the way they like it. It solves the "nobody agrees on toppings" problem, it gets the kids genuinely excited to help, and because we're building it ourselves, it's a much healthier option than takeout.
What You'll Need
- Tortillas (we like carb-smart tortillas as the base — they crisp up beautifully and keep things lighter than traditional dough)
- Pizza sauce
- Part-skim mozzarella cheese
- Toppings of your choice — in our house that's mushrooms, turkey pepperoni, onions, and green peppers, but use whatever your family loves
How to Make It
Set up your station. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or foil, and give them a light spray of olive oil.
Lay out the tortillas. Place them directly on the prepared sheets — one per person, or more if anyone wants extra.
Prep the toppings. Dice up all your toppings ahead of time and set them out in bowls. This is the step that turns dinner into an activity — kids can grab whatever they want and build their own pizza exactly how they like it.

Let everyone build their own. Sauce, cheese, toppings — everybody customizes their own personal pizza. No fighting over toppings, no picky-eater standoffs.
Bake. Pop them in the oven at 400°F for 8–10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the edges are crisp.
Enjoy! Super quick, genuinely healthy, and every single person at the table is eating something they picked out themselves.
Why This Works So Well for Kids
This is the same principle we talk about throughout our Cooking with Kenson Kids series: kids are far more excited to eat something they had a hand in making. When they're choosing their own toppings and building their own pizza, there's no negotiating, no pressure — just a fun, hands-on dinner they're actually proud of.
It also means picky eaters get total control over what goes on their plate, while everyone else can go as adventurous as they want with toppings. Everybody wins, and Friday night stays exactly the tradition it's always been — just a little healthier.
