Fall Family Fitness: Easy Outdoor Games as the Weather Cools
Get Moving with Kenson Kids
As temperatures start to drop, outdoor time gets a lot more comfortable. It's a great window to get the whole family outside together before winter pushes everyone back indoors.
Why Fall Is a Great Time to Move as a Family
Cooler weather means longer, more comfortable outdoor stretches, with more energy for everyone.

Easy Outdoor Games to Try
Backyard obstacle course. Use what you already have — a jump rope, a path to crawl under, cones or chairs to weave around. Lay the jump rope flat to balance-walk, drape a blanket over two chairs to crawl through, and set out a hula hoop or pillows to hop between. Time each lap and let kids try to beat their own best time rather than each other's, or let them redesign the course every round. For little ones, skip the timer and play follow-the-leader through the course.
Leaf pile games. Rake a pile, jump in, repeat. Make raking part of the fun by having everyone work on one big pile together. Then try a freeze-jump contest, where kids leap in and freeze in a funny pose, or a leaf scavenger hunt to find one red leaf, one yellow leaf, and one bigger than your hand. Quick safety tip: check the pile for sticks, rocks, or anything sharp before anyone jumps, and skip piles near the street.
Family relay races. Simple challenges — running, hopping, or crab-walking a set distance and back. Change the move for each leg: bunny hops, bear crawls, walking backward, or balancing a spoon with an acorn on it. Split into teams (parents vs. kids, or mixed) and let a different kid choose the next move each round. Add a silly finish, like spinning three times before tagging the next person.
A neighborhood walk or bike ride. Time outside together, moving at whatever pace works for your family. Turn it into a scavenger hunt: spot something orange, three different kinds of leaves, a pinecone, or a squirrel. Older kids can pick the destination, like the park or a friend's house, or take turns choosing which way to turn at each corner. If you're biking, helmets on for everyone.
Making It a Habit, Not a One-Time Event
Even 15–20 minutes a few times a week adds up, and it models movement as a normal, enjoyable part of daily life.
