Family Fun Nights with Kenson Kids: How to Start a Weekly Game Night Tradition (No Screens Required)

The Night Everything Changed

A parent we know described it like this:

"We were all in the same room but nobody was together. My husband was on his phone. I was half-watching TV. My four-year-old was on the tablet. We were technically a family sitting in the same space — and we were completely disconnected from each other."

That night, she put the tablet away, turned off the TV, pulled a simple card game out of the closet, and sat down on the floor. Her daughter looked at her like she had suggested something mildly insane.

Twenty minutes later, they were both in tears — from laughing.

That was two years ago. Game night has been a weekly tradition in their house ever since.

Why Weekly Game Night Is Worth Protecting

It builds connection in a way that passive screen time simply cannot. When you play a game together, you're making eye contact, reacting to each other, celebrating together, handling disappointment together.

It teaches children essential life skills. Taking turns. Following rules. Winning graciously. Losing without falling apart. Paying attention. Waiting.

It gives children something to look forward to. Young children thrive on predictable routines and rituals.

It creates memories that outlast any screen. Ask any adult about their favorite childhood memories — very few will describe something they watched on TV.

How to Set It Up So It Actually Sticks

Choose a consistent night and protect it. Pick a night that works for your family's schedule and commit to it. Put it in the calendar and treat it like any other important appointment.

Keep it simple, especially at first. A simple card game, a matching game, a bingo set — something the whole family can play without long setup time or complicated rules.

Make it special without making it complicated. A special snack. A blanket on the floor. The same playlist. A silly trophy for the winner.

Let the kids help choose. Keep a short "game night rotation" and let whoever didn't choose last time pick this week.

Put the phones away. Phones in another room, screens off, and give each other your complete, undivided attention for one hour a week. That's it.

Age-Perfect Game Night Ideas for Toddlers & Preschoolers

Matching and memory games. Start with fewer cards for younger children and increase as they get more confident.

Simple board games. Look for games where winning depends more on luck than strategy.

Movement games. Freeze dance, Simon Says, simple obstacle challenges — wonderful for the 2–4 age group.

Card games. Go Fish or matching games are easy to learn, fast to play, and repeatable.

The Rules of Family Fun Night

Rule 1: Everyone plays. Get down on the floor, at the same level.

Rule 2: No screens. Not even for "just a second."

Rule 3: How we lose matters as much as how we win. Model gracious losing.

Rule 4: No pressure to be perfect. The goal is joy, not correct gameplay.

Rule 5: Make it yours. Let it evolve. Let the kids influence it.

Starting Tonight

You don't need to wait for the "right" game or the "right" night. Start small. Start tonight if you want. Pick the simplest game you own, sit down on the floor, and play.

The tradition starts the first time you show up for it.
