Get Moving with Kenson Kids: Indoor Obstacle Course for Toddlers & Preschoolers
Welcome to Get Moving with Kenson Kids — our series dedicated to helping toddlers and preschoolers build healthy movement habits that will last a lifetime. Each post is packed with simple, fun ideas that get little bodies active, whether it’s sunny, rainy, or blazing hot outside.
When It’s Too Hot to Go Outside, Bring the Adventure Indoors
It’s summer. It’s hot. The playground feels like the surface of the sun, the backyard is a sauna, and your toddler has been inside since 9am with approximately one thousand percent more energy than any small human should legally possess.
Sound familiar?
Here’s the good news: you don’t need a gym, special equipment, or even a large space to give your little one the kind of active, full-body movement their growing bodies are craving. All you need is your living room, a few household items, and about ten minutes of setup.
Welcome to the Indoor Obstacle Course — one of the best, most versatile, most giggle-inducing activities you can do with a toddler or preschooler on a hot summer day. And we’ve made it even easier with our free Indoor Obstacle Course Cards — 15 illustrated activity cards your child can cut out, mix up, and use to create a brand new course every single time.
Why Obstacle Courses Are So Good for Little Kids
Gross motor development. Crawling, jumping, balancing, climbing, and rolling all strengthen the large muscle groups that young children need for running, sports, coordination, and eventually writing. An obstacle course packs in more gross motor practice in 20 minutes than most kids get in a whole afternoon.
Body awareness and spatial reasoning. Figuring out how to move their body through, over, under, and around objects teaches children to understand where their body is in space — a skill called proprioception that is foundational for athletic ability, handwriting, and even reading.
Problem-solving and sequencing. Obstacle courses require children to follow a sequence of steps and figure out how to navigate each challenge. This is exactly the kind of thinking they’ll need in school — and it’s disguised as play.
Confidence and resilience. When a child figures out how to get across the balance beam or crawl through the tunnel without knocking it down, they feel genuinely accomplished. And when they fall (they will fall), they learn to get back up and try again.
Burning the energy they need to burn. A child who has moved their body vigorously is a child who is calmer, more focused, and ready to transition to quieter activities. The obstacle course does double duty: it’s active play AND it sets the rest of the day up for success.

Here’s what makes this printable extra special: because the activities are on individual cards, your child picks them, shuffles them, and creates a completely different course every time. No two sessions are ever the same — which means no boredom, ever. Kids who design their own course are far more invested in completing it, and the act of choosing and arranging the cards adds a wonderful planning and sequencing element to the activity.
How to set it up:
- Print and cut out the 15 activity cards
- Mix them up and let your child pick 5–8 to use
- Lay the cards on the floor in order to mark the course
- Set up the simple household props each card calls for
- Go!
How to Run the Course
Let your child be the course designer. Hand them the shuffled card deck and let them pick which cards go in what order. This single step transforms the obstacle course from something you set up for them into something they built themselves — and that ownership makes all the difference in their enthusiasm and effort.
First run-through: Walk through the course together once before adding any speed or pressure. Let your child figure out how their body moves through each challenge without urgency.
Time them (optional): Older preschoolers love being timed. Use your phone’s stopwatch and cheer for their personal best — never compare to anyone else, only to their own last time.
Shuffle and go again: The magic of the cards is what happens next. After the first run, let your child shuffle the deck and pick a new set of cards to create a brand new course. Bear Walk might come before Balance Beam this time. Crab Walk might be the finale. Every round is a fresh adventure.
Add music: Put on an upbeat playlist and watch the energy soar. Music makes everything more fun and naturally encourages bigger, faster movement.
Add your own cards: The printable encourages kids to make their own challenge cards too — a wonderful creative extension for preschoolers who want to invent their own moves.

Making Movement a Daily Habit
At Kenson Kids, we believe that healthy movement habits formed in the toddler and preschool years become the foundation for a lifetime of physical confidence and wellbeing. Children who learn to love moving their bodies — who associate exercise with fun, laughter, and accomplishment rather than obligation — carry that relationship with physical activity forward.
The Indoor Obstacle Course Cards aren’t just a way to survive a hot day indoors. They’re a way to show your child that their body is capable, strong, and built for adventure — and that moving it feels absolutely wonderful.
