January isn't the only time of year that feels like a fresh start. For families, September carries that same energy — new school year, new teacher, new grade, new routines. It's a natural moment to pause and ask: what do we want this year to look like?

This week's craft is a simple one, but it opens up a bigger conversation: a parent-and-child vision board built around one or two real goals for the year ahead.

Why a Vision Board (and Why Now)

A vision board works well for kids because it turns something abstract — "I want to do better this year" — into something visual and specific. Doing it together, rather than assigning it as a solo activity, turns it into a conversation. You get to hear what your child actually cares about right now.

The goal isn't a long list. One or two goals, chosen by your child, is plenty.

How to Do It Together

1. Start with a conversation, not a craft table. Ask open questions: "What's something you'd like to get better at this year?" Let your child lead.

2. Narrow it down to one or two goals. Gently help them narrow big wishes to one or two that feel real and reachable this year.

3. Talk through strategies, not just outcomes. Ask: "What's one small thing you could do this week that helps with that goal?" Small, doable steps make the goal feel possible.

4. Build the board. Bring in craft supplies and let your child choose images and words that represent their goal(s).

5. Put it somewhere visible. Hang it as a quiet, ongoing reminder of what they're working toward.
